HM Trawler Japan was hired by the Royal Navy during the First World War for mine sweeping duties. On 16th August, 1915 she was operating in the North Sea near to Harwich along with HM Trawler Touchstone. Heaving in her sweep wire it was discovered that it was fouled by a mine, which, when only 3-4 yards from the boat, exploded. HM Trawler Japan sank within 30 seconds with the loss of five of her crew, including Petty fficer Wooldridge.
